The Beginning
The world has a beginning — I call it the mother of the world.”
The world begins with the Tao. The Tao is the mother of all things.
Knowing the Child
Having obtained the mother, know the child.”
When you know the mother (Tao), you know all things that come from it. This is the path of understanding.
Returning to Guard
Having known the child, return to guard the mother.”
After knowing the child (all things), return to guard the mother (Tao). This completes the cycle.
Blocking the Openings
Block the openings, close the doors.”
The openings are the senses. Blocking them protects your inner stillness from external disturbance.
Seeing the Small
Seeing the small is clarity.”
Seeing the small details is not clarity. Seeing the small (the origin) is true clarity.
Guarding the Soft
Guarding the soft is strength.”
True strength is not hardness but softness. Water is soft but overcomes stone.
Following the Constant
This is following the constant.”
Following the constant (the Tao) avoids disaster and brings completion.
Modern Application
We open ourselves to everything. Chapter 52 suggests: block the openings and see the small.
