是以聖人常善救人,故無棄人;

故善人者,不善人之師;

English Rendering

Good traveling leaves no wheel tracks.

Good speech leaves no fault to find.

Good counting needs no calculator.

Good locking needs no bolts — yet nothing can open it.

Good tying needs no rope — yet nothing can untie it.

Therefore the sage is good at saving people, so no one is abandoned.

Good at saving things, so nothing is discarded.

This is called following the clear.

Therefore the good person is the bad person's teacher.

The bad person is the good person's resource.

Not valuing the teacher, not loving the resource — though wise, one is greatly confused.

This is called the essential mystery.

Five Examples of Skill

Laozi describes five skills that work without visible effort:

Good traveling leaves no tracks
Good speech leaves no fault
Good counting needs no calculator
Good locking needs no bolts
Good tying needs no rope

Each skill appears to work without tools — the skill is in the person, not the tool.

The Sage’s Saving

The sage is good at saving people, so no one is abandoned.”

The sage sees the potential in everyone. No one is discarded as useless.

Following the Clear

This is called following the clear.”

袭明 means following the light, understanding clearly, acting from wisdom.

The Teacher and Student

The good person is the bad person’s teacher. The bad person is the good person’s resource.”

The teacher needs students. Students need teachers. Each needs the other. This is a mutual relationship.

The Essential Mystery

This is called the essential mystery.”

Not valuing the teacher or the student creates confusion. Understanding this mutual relationship is the essential mystery.
